About the Chartered Management Professional (CMP) Designation

GAMA International Canada is pleased to offer the Chartered Management Professional Designation. The CMP curriculum provides a leadership skills development program for financial services management, and is the first of its kind in Canada.

This program - developed in Partnership with the Sobey School of Business and Centre for Leadership Excellence at Saint Mary’s University - includes a combination of directly applicable ‘academic’, ‘skill building’ and ‘business planning’ components. Each of these program elements is delivered using a balance of assigned readings, self-assessment tools, online testing, experiential workshops and teleconferencing.

The CMP Designation

The Chartered Management Professional designation has been developed to fill an important gap in the financial services industry – directly applicable training and formal recognition for individuals in a management and leadership role.

The designation is awarded upon completion of 9 courses, representing 10 credits, designed to enhance knowledge, hone skills, and develop a personalized business plan. Importantly, the business planning framework presents an opportunity to integrate all CMP program learnings while generating an up-to-date strategy and plan of execution.

The CMP designation is awarded by the GAMA Learning Institute. The Board of Directors of this governing body include representatives from the financial services industry, along with the President of GAMA International Canada and the Dean of the Sobey School of Business at Saint Mary’s University.

CMP Credit Equivalency

In recognition of the direct alignment that may exist between programs, GAMA will grant credit equivalency standing to elements of corporate partner companies’ existing development programs equating to a maximum of two CMP Skill-Building credits. Confirmation of eligibility, along with specification of the areas within the CMP Program for which credit equivalency will be granted, shall be determined jointly by representatives from GAMA and each corporate partner company.

CMP Credit Exemption

  • In cases where corporate partner companies’ courses qualify for CMP Credit Equivalency, GAMA is prepared to grant credit exemption for a maximum of 2 credits to qualifying students sponsored by that corporate partner. These exemptions would be granted on the basis of prior completion of the corresponding courses within the past 12 months (along with other qualification criteria to be mutually determined by GAMA and each corporate partner).
  • To gain Credit Exemption, students must complete a standard Credit Exemption Application Form, for joint review and approval by the GAMA Learning Institute and the corporate partner company.
  • Note: The intention behind this credit exemption policy is purely to eliminate course (and cost) redundancy for CMP Program participants who have completed required course work in the recent past (albeit prior to engagement in the CMP Program). As such, it is GAMA’s expectation that credit exemptions will be granted to students in very limited numbers, and most likely only through the initial phase of the CMP Program’s market launch.

CMP Credit Exemptions will be granted on the following case-by-case basis:

  • Directly comparable content from prior courses completed (whether sourced internally or externally); and
  • Directly comparable hours of course content experienced; and
  • Highly comparable delivery methods for course content.

The Credit Exemption process will be governed as follows:

  • The student must apply for exemption, based upon guidelines provided on a standard “Application For Qualifying Exemption”; then
  • A sub-committee of the GAMA Learning Institute Board of Directors will review those applications (in consultation with the Accredited Educational Partners, where applicable); then
  • The Board of Directors will advise the student whether their application for exemption has been accepted or declined.
  • The Board of Directors will also advise the student’s sponsoring company of their ‘verdict’ (with the student’s permission).
