COURSE OVERVIEW:

This course comprises an in-depth look at leadership in organizations. The course is essentially divided into three sections:

1. First, we consider the question of definition: What is organizational leadership?

2. Second, we consider the major theories of leadership that have dominated much of our thinking in the past century (e.g., trait theories, behavioural theories, contingency theories, dyadic theories, transformational leadership).

3. Finally, we apply our understanding of leadership to specific domains (e.g., leading change, leading teams, coaching).

The course is structured so as to achieve both academic objectives and a degree of personal leadership development. In addition to reading about leadership theories and principles, we will spend some time in each unit trying to apply these theories.

At the end of the course participants will:
a. Demonstrate a good understanding of the nature of organizational leadership, &
b. Demonstrate an understanding of their own leadership style
