Real-Life Example: Bruce Field's Study Group

The following details actual experiences of a real-life Study Group. Bruce Field has offered to contribute notes from his Study Group, which you can read about below. Watch for updates as the group continues on its journey!

Study Group Log

Members of Study Group:
Paul Byron (The Co-operators), Randy Chapman (Maritime Life), Andy Gellatly (IDC Financial), David Gray (Maritime Life), Steve McInnis (Maritime Life), Bruce Field (Clarica)

Subject matter: The group will be working through the Coaching & Leadership Academic Course offered as part of the CMP designation program. This course is divided into modules in a self-study format plus an online multiple-choice exam.

First Meeting - April 8/04

AGENDA:
1. Review study material
2. Set meeting dates & location
3. Assign chapters to be read and reviewed at each Study Group meeting
4. Assign responsibilities by designating a leader for each chapter

NOTES:

Study group set up

1. Preparation for the first meeting helps set up the study group. Prepare by:
- Reviewing all material to determine work load.
- Dividing the work load into fairly equal portions or simply by chapter.
- Reading the forward material for tips on handling the materials that will be assigned.

2. Setup
- Divide the individual chapters amongst the group members.
- Set up the dates and venues now for the full schedule of study sessions and target an end date for the exam. The typical setup for each meeting will include a discussion of the key points of the chapter (moderated by the leader for that chapter), a summary to be completed by each chapter leader and distributed at the meeting, and a review of the last module practice test by the leader from the previous session.
- It was decided that meetings will alternate between the offices of Bruce and Andy.

3. Set up the last meeting for a pretest summary session. Review all the chapters or modules by leader/moderator.

Comments:
We were at a disadvantage by not having our Coaching & Leadership textbook prior to this first meeting. We decided that each designated leader for each chapter would lead in a review session and provide a summary of the chapter for all members. Following each meeting, members would complete the on-line practice test provided by the textbook for the chapters reviewed.

Future Meeting Dates:
May 6th: Review chapters 1 (Randy), 2 (Andy), 7 (Bruce)
May 20th: Review chapters 3 (Dave), 8 (Steve), 5 (Paul)
June 9th: Review chapters 9 (Randy), 10 (Andy)
June 29th: Review chapters 11 (Bruce), Leadership & Coaching (Steve & Paul)

Second Meeting - May 6/04

AGENDA:

1. Randy Chapman reviewed Chapter 1
2. Andy Gellatly reviewed Chapter 2
3. Bruce Field reviewed Chapter 7
4. Confirmed next meeting date and location and discussed any changes to our process. Next meeting is scheduled for May 20/04.

NOTES:

Strategy for review. All members of study group were expected to read all 3 chapters. The assigned moderators for each chapter prepared a hard-copy review summary for all members. The review summary was based on the "Review and Discussion Questions" located at the end of each chapter in the text. In addition, the moderator also discussed the case study at the end of their chapter.

Sixth Meeting - July 8/04

NOTES:

We accessed the Sample Questions through the website www.prenhall.com/yukl.
